Head Coach Stephen Vehslage has confidence in what his Boys Varsity Boys Golf team will accomplish this season.
Veteran Strength
After a solid preseason showing in Florida, which consisted of several competitive intra-squad matchups, the Storm Boys’ Golf team is ready to take the course for league play. Captains Watson Meyer ‘24, Chad Ruggiero ‘24, and Eli Brody ‘24 used preseason to set the tone for the spring by showing good sportsmanship, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to getting better each round. The leadership of these three veteran golfers will undoubtedly give them an advantage against their opponents as they are all strong mentors who will help levitate their younger teammates.
Keys To Success
Vehslage states that the goals for this season are to “improve as players, get smarter about course management, and compete well against teams in our league.” Last season, the Storm squad was able to secure significant victories against some highly experienced and skilled teams, and Vehslage is optimistic that with the right mindset and attention to detail, the team will be able to repeat and add to the “W” column this season. Although Vehslage expects that even the best players will make some mistakes in every round, he believes, "The key is to avoid compounding the errors, piling mistakes on top of each other in the same hole. It's great to get birdies and score really well, but often the key to winning is being able to avoid big numbers on individual holes.” While this may seem like a simple explanation of what it takes to win, it is certainly easier said than done in a game that requires the utmost focus at all times and a strong ability to let go of mistakes.
Bright Future
In addition to the confidence he has in his returning team members, Vehslage also relayed his excitement about newcomers Jason Slow ‘26, Bennett Kurtz ‘27, Teddy Lukens ‘28, and Austin Glosserman ‘26, all of whom he believes will contribute positively to the team, both on and off the course. Vehslage commented on his newest members: “They’re good golfers, and they all have the potential to get even better over the next few years.” The future looks bright for Storm Boys Golf – let’s hope the weather follows suit!
